Teaching Nemotron Greek: Mining a Corpus, Adapting Retrieval, and Grounding Generation for Modern Greek across Specialist Domains

Ayoub Kirouane, Christos Petrocheilos
摘要

Modern Greek is absent from NVIDIA's Nemotron retrieval models and from major multilingual retrieval benchmarks, despite being important for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) in legal, energy, financial, and medical applications. We present an end-to-end adaptation of the Nemotron retrieval stack for Modern Greek, including corpus mining, synthetic supervision, retrieval model training, reranker adaptation, reader fine-tuning, and a new benchmark called HERA. Our study shows that a parameter-free BM25 baseline outperforms several off-the-shelf multilingual dense retrieval models on specialist Greek corpora. After fine-tuning on 65,773 Greek retrieval pairs, a Nemotron 1B embedder improves nDCG@10 from 0.362 to 0.835 and substantially outperforms its unadapted counterpart. The learned language competence transfers to general-domain Greek, although the advantage over BM25 remains domain-dependent. We further adapt a cross-encoder reranker and demonstrate consistent improvements across specialist domains. Finally, we LoRA-tune a Nemotron 30B-A3B mixture-of-experts reader for grounded generation, increasing judged answer correctness from 29.4% to 66.9% while significantly improving faithfulness and citation quality. We also introduce HERA, the first large-scale Greek benchmark for retrieval-augmented generation, and release our adapted models and benchmark to support future research on Greek-language RAG systems.

Helping Music Co-Creation Agents 'Listen' Well: Hierarchical Self-Supervised World Models for Understanding and Generation

Scott H. Hawley
摘要

Collaborative music agents need internal representations rich enough to support both understanding and generation, yet flexible enough for a workflow where the human retains agency. We present a hierarchical self-supervised ``world model'' for symbolic music: a 2.55M-parameter Swin V2 encoder trained on MIDI piano-roll images with JEPA-style objectives (pitch- and time-shift equivariance, masked embedding prediction, and a distributional regularizer), using no labels and no music-theory vocabulary. Probing the frozen embeddings shows that the level at which a musical property becomes decodable tracks its musical time scale: phrase boundaries are read off the coarsest levels, note density and harmonic detail off the finest. Temporal and phrase structure emerge from the self-supervised objectives alone, while harmonic content must be asked for; a small chord-supervision head raises joint chord recovery from .18 to .54, and key detection, which is never supervised, from .16 to .70. Following the Representation AutoEncoder paradigm, a conditional flow-matching model stands in for a trained decoder, flowing in pixel space from PCA-reduced conditioning: it reproduces a target window at pixel F1 $0.996$, and the same per-level conditioning dropout that controls how far variations stray also enables graphical prompting for masked inpainting with no inpainting-specific sampler. The pipeline runs on CPU producing a suggestion in $2.8$ s, or $0.6$ s on Apple MPS, which we demonstrate in a live interactive demo. In concert with an LLM-based brain, these capabilities supply the core of a collaborative music creation agent in service of, rather than in place of, human agency.

DELTA-TTS: Adapting Autoregressive Model into Diffusion Language Model for Text-to-Speech

Junwon Moon, Yejin Lee, Seungbeom Kim, Hoseong Ahn, Sewoong Park, Heeseung Kim, Kyuhong Shim
摘要

Autoregressive (AR) text-to-speech (TTS) models generate discrete speech tokens sequentially, which makes inference slow and can degrade robustness, since local errors propagate to later positions and can escalate into hallucination. This limitation stems from their left-to-right AR commitment: each token must be determined before future speech-token context is available. However, such ordering is not an inherent requirement for TTS, since the model receives the full input text before synthesis. In this paper, we introduce DELTA-TTS, a lightweight LoRA-based adaptation framework that converts a pretrained AR TTS model into a discrete diffusion language model (dLLM) for confidence-ordered speech-token decoding. To better capture the local structure of speech, DELTA-TTS incorporates a convolution module that injects local acoustic context, together with a 1/t-weighted training objective and a time-shifted inference schedule that together defer low-confidence positions to later steps. Trained on only 585 hours of LibriTTS, DELTA-TTS achieves a 1.75% WER on Seed-TTS test-en, outperforming its AR backbone while generating tokens 3.3x faster. Further analysis shows that DELTA-TTS produces sharper text--speech alignment, increases overall decoding confidence, and mitigates the hallucinations observed in AR generation.

Deep Learning for Real-Time Sound Order Recognition in Human-Robot Interaction

Rezaul Tutul, Usaid Khan, Andre Jakob, Ilona Buchem
摘要

Recognizing the temporal order of overlapping sounds is an underexplored challenge in human-robot interaction (HRI), with direct relevance to applications such as first responder detection systems. This paper presents a deep learning framework for real-time sound order recognition using recordable buzzers that emit distinct non-verbal sounds (cat meows, dog barks, helicopter noises). A multi-branch convolutional neural network (CNN) processes Mel spectrograms, Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), and short-time Fourier transform (STFT) features, with an attention-based fusion mechanism to emphasize critical temporal cues. Experiments were conducted under same-amplitude, varied-amplitude, and unseen sound conditions. The proposed system achieved 99% accuracy in balanced overlaps, 91% under amplitude variation, and 74% on unseen test data with normalization. These results demonstrate that deep learning can reliably recognize sound order in overlapping conditions, supporting practical HRI scenarios. While experiments were conducted on carefully controlled synthetic overlaps, we additionally report latency benchmarks demonstrating real-time feasibility and provide an extended discussion on generalization, ecological validity, and deployment challenges in real-room environments.

InvFlowFD: Reference-Free and Background-Set-Free Perceptual Music Quality Metric with Flow Matching Inversion

Alon Ziv, Harel Pogoda, Yossi Adi
摘要

Existing reference-free methods for evaluating music perceptual quality alleviate the need for paired noisy-clean data, but they still rely on a background set, which is used to compute aggregated statistics of clean audio samples. In this work, we propose a novel approach that eliminates this requirement, achieving background-set-free and reference-free quality estimation using only a pre-trained Flow Matching backbone. We demonstrate that unconditional Flow Matching inversion via simple Euler integration is sufficient to detect various artificial distortions and accurately rank music generation models against human perceptual judgments. We introduce InvFlowFD, which performs flow inversion and compares a group of inverted samples to the prior distribution. We evaluate our method against prior work, quantitatively and with a thorough human study. Results suggest that InvFlowFD is highly correlated with human perception of sound distortions, as well as generative models' quality, while being more flexible and less restrictive than existing metrics.

Smartphone Audio Based Distress Detection

Anil Sharma, Sarthak Ahuja, Mayank Gautam, Sanjit Kaul
摘要

We investigate an unobtrusive and $24\times7$ human distress detection and signaling system, Always Alert, that requires the smartphone, and not its human owner, to be on alert. The system leverages the microphone sensor, at least one of which is available on every phone, and assumes the availability of a data network. We propose a novel two-stage supervised learning framework, using support vector machines (SVMs), that executes on a user's smartphone and monitors natural vocal expressions of fear---screaming and crying in our study---when a human being is in harm's way. The challenge is to achieve a high distress detection rate while ensuring that the false alarm rate is a manageable overhead, while a typical smartphone user goes about living life as usual. We train the learning framework with carefully selected audio fingerprints of distress and of varied environmental contexts. The audio is used to tune the learning framework to obtain a desirable distress detection rate and false alarm rate (FAR). The ability of the proposed framework to detect distress in rather challenging audio environments is demonstrated. Exploiting the time contiguous nature of false alarms further allows us to reduce the FAR. We show the feasibility of using our framework anytime and anywhere by testing it over many hours of audio fingerprints recorded by volunteers on their smartphones, as they went about their daily routines. We are able to achieve high distress detection rates at an average overhead that is equivalent to about 1 facebook post every 3 to 4 hours.

HyPASE: Hyperbolic Geometry for Parameter-Efficient Speech Emotion Fine-Tuning Framework for Large Audio-Language Models

Tian Jin, Ruikang Zhang, Zefeng Zhao, Ding Luo, Jin Zeng
摘要

Large Audio-Language Models (LALMs) excel at general speech understanding; however, adapting them to fine-grained tasks like Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) remains a significant bottleneck. Current Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT) methods typically operate in flat Euclidean space, and this geometry fails to capture the multi-granularity nature of emotion cues, which range from low-level prosody to high-level semantics. To address this, we propose HyPASE, a hyperbolic PEFT framework for LALM-based SER. HyPASE leverages the Poincare ball model, using the hyperbolic radius as an explicit proxy for representational granularity. The framework consists of two core components: a Hyperbolic Geometric Adapter (HGA) for layer-adaptive weight modulation, and an Emotion-aware Multi-capacity Cross-modal Aggregator (EMCA) that compresses multi-scale features into compact audio prefixes. Empirical results on standard benchmarks show that HyPASE outperforms Euclidean PEFT baselines across all metrics on MELD and achieves a notable Unweighted Accuracy gain on IEMOCAP, particularly in class-imbalanced emotion recognition, with the accompanying slight Weighted Accuracy trade-off reflecting hyperbolic space's geometric prioritization of minority-class representations; furthermore, HyPASE achieves robust zero-shot cross-dataset generalization within a constrained parameter budget. By grounding the adaptation process in hyperbolic geometry, HyPASE offers a highly efficient path for LALM fine-tuning.

AudioScape-TTA: A Structured Soundscape Benchmark for Fine-Grained Text-to-Audio Evaluation

Jinting Wang, Yuguang Yang, Shengyu Li, Yan Rong, Shan Yang, Xiaoda Yang, Li Liu
摘要

Text-to-audio (TTA) generation has recently achieved remarkable progress in synthesizing realistic audio from natural language descriptions. However, determining whether generated audio faithfully satisfies complex textual instructions remains challenging. Existing benchmarks mainly rely on global similarity metrics, providing limited insight into fine-grained semantic failures. To address this limitation, we introduce \textbf{AudioScape-TTA}, a structured and complexity-aware benchmark for fine-grained TTA evaluation. AudioScape-TTA represents realistic soundscapes through modality-aware semantic structures and characterizes generation complexity using event density and structural complexity. Based on these annotations, we propose a rubric-based audio-grounded evaluation framework that verifies event realization, acoustic attributes, and speech content through fine-grained semantic criteria. The benchmark contains 2,258 audio-text pairs with 25,707 binary QA rubrics, enabling scalable and interpretable analysis of TTA systems. Experiments on 13 representative open-source TTA models reveal persistent limitations in fine-grained attribute control, speech-content preservation, and compositional soundscape generation. Human validation further demonstrates that our rubric-based evaluation achieves stronger alignment with human semantic judgments than conventional global similarity metrics.

A Dual Evaluation for Music Transcription

Ping Wang, Guang Yang, Nazif Can Tamer, Victoria Ebert, Noah A. Smith
摘要

Automatic music transcription systems produce sheet music that can be read and played back. We argue that these two targets call for complementary evaluations of notation similarity to a reference score and playback similarity to the original performance, respectively. Our study considers notation similarity metrics from the optical music recognition literature and a wide range of playback-similarity methods validated through a listening study across over 100 participants and 230 piano recordings covering 23 works, 30 performers, and six composers. We find, fortuitously, that the playback similarity metric that correlates best with human judgments, CLEWS, is also the cheapest to run. We also find that the two evaluation dimensions favor different systems among a collection of 24 pipelines formed by pairing eight audio-to-MIDI models with three MIDI-to-score converters, with the latter component systematically determining the favored objective. The complementarity between metrics also holds when adding to the pool Rubato, a new end-to-end system that offers substantially improved notation similarity while remaining competitive, though not the best, on playback similarity.

Towards Robust Version Identification in the Wild: A Dataset, Benchmark, and Fine-Tuning Study

Simon Hachmeier, R. Oguz Araz, Dmitry Bogdanov, Robert Jäschke, Xavier Serra
摘要

Existing datasets for musical version identification (VI) are primarily derived from curated metadata sources such as SecondHandSongs and Discogs, and are therefore dominated by professionally recorded tracks. This leads to a domain mismatch with real-world scenarios, where amateur and user-generated content is prevalent. To address this limitation, we introduce DiVers, a large-scale VI dataset comprising over 1.1 million musical versions, with train-validation-test splits compatible with established datasets such as Discogs-VI-YT, SHS100K, and Da-TACOS. In addition to standard version-level annotations, DiVers provides automatically assigned tags (e.g., instrumental, live) and segment-level predictions indicating the presence or absence of music. We evaluate the proposed dataset by training state-of-the-art VI systems. Our results show that models trained on DiVers achieve substantially improved robustness to acoustically diverse and noisy inputs, while maintaining a stable performance on cleaner, studio-quality benchmarks. We release the dataset metadata, code for its construction, and all experimental pipelines to support reproducibility.

Masked diffusion enables coherent beat tracking

Francesco Foscarin, Filip Korzeniowski, Richard Vogl
摘要

Current neural networks for beat tracking generate invalid outputs, such as consecutive downbeats and erratic tempo changes, even when these are not present in the training data. Heavy post-processing techniques can alleviate these problems, but the original cause of this inconsistent behaviour remains unknown. We hypothesise that it stems from inadequate modelling of multiple plausible output beat grids, resulting in an invalid mixture of competing interpretations. We propose a masked diffusion approach that properly models multiple outputs and enables the model to build coherent predictions through iterative inference. We devise three modifications to standard masked diffusion that enable its application to beat tracking: independent masking of beats and downbeats during training and inference, a balanced masking scheduler for inference, and peak-picking across inference steps. Our approach reduces erratic behaviours and improves beat-tracking performance.

Visual Representation Matters: Exploiting Temporal Differences in Video-to-Audio Generation

Zehua Chen, Junyou Wang, Yuxuan Jiang, Zhenying Fang, Yusheng Dai, Jianfei Chen, Ziwei Liu, Jun Zhu
摘要

Video-to-audio (V2A) generation extends image-to-audio generation (I2A) by introducing consecutive frames that provide essential temporal cues for audio synthesis. However, existing conditional diffusion-based V2A methods typically enhance visual conditioning with additional audio-visual supervision, acoustic structure prediction, or reasoning from large multimodal models, requiring extra networks or strong inductive biases. Inspired by recent advances in visual representation learning, we introduce TD-V2A, which leverages temporal differences (TD) as the key representation that distinguishes V2A from I2A, enriching visual conditioning with minimal architectural modification. We first investigate TD at both the frame and feature levels to identify the most effective representation level at which TD complements visual representations. Based on these findings, we develop a hierarchically continual learning strategy and an annealed temporal differences guidance method to progressively learn and exploit TD information during diffusion training and sampling process, respectively. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate that effectively exploiting TD through our proposed framework significantly improves end-to-end V2A generation quality, even outperforming dedicated V2A representations such as contrastive audio-visual pretraining.

AudioDER: A Deduplication-Enhanced Reasoning Dataset for Post-Training Large Audio-Language Models

摘要

Recent advances in pretrained large audio-language models (LALMs) have demonstrated strong capabilities across speech, sound, and music. To adapt these models to downstream tasks without the cost of pretraining from scratch, post-training has become a widely adopted paradigm. However, the effectiveness of post-training depends critically on the quality of the training corpus. We observe that existing post-training corpora, often constructed by aggregating public audio datasets, suffer from substantial acoustic redundancy, as many of these datasets are sourced from overlapping media platforms. Such redundancy leads to repeated exposure to similar acoustic patterns, causing diminishing returns in performance despite increased data volume. address this issue, we propose a three-stage data construction pipeline that performs acoustic redundancy filtering, converts retained samples into a unified multiple-choice question-answering format with chain-of-thought generation, and finally applies quality verification and filtering. Using this pipeline, we construct AudioRE, a post-training dataset of approximately 286k instances spanning sound, speech, and music. Supervised fine-tuning on AudioRE consistently improves the performance of Qwen2-Audio-7B-Instruct across diverse audio understanding and reasoning benchmarks, outperforming models trained on the unfiltered raw corpus with substantially more instances. These results validate the effectiveness of our redundancy-aware data construction pipeline and the resulting AudioRE dataset, and further highlight the importance of minimizing acoustic redundancy in audio-language post-training. To facilitate future research, we will release both the AudioRE and the fine-tuned Qwen2-AudioRE checkpoint.

Leakage-Audited Benchmarking Reveals Limited Evidence for Cross-Subject Auditory-Evoked EEG Vowel Perception Decoding

Xiaoyang Li, Zeyan Tao
摘要

We tested whether auditory-evoked EEG supports subject-independent five-vowel perception decoding when trial identity, model identity, prediction provenance, and participant-level inference are controlled within a single benchmark. We reconstructed Study 2 event tables from OpenNeuro ds006104 version 1.0.1 and analyzed the consonant-vowel pair task. One-to-one marker-stimulus pairing yielded 3,840 independent trials; control-condition selection and artifact rejection retained 1,094 epochs from 16 participants and 61 EEG channels. Thirteen unique implementations were evaluated using leave-one-subject-out testing, with participant metrics reconstructed from 36,102 trial predictions across 33 complete prediction replicas. Random Forest was numerically highest at 21.474% balanced accuracy (95% participant-bootstrap interval, 19.526-23.482%; chance, 20%), but neither its participant-level tests nor any implementation survived correction across the 13-model family. Deep-model performance was close to chance, and several architectures showed substantial seed-dependent variation and low trial-label agreement. In a separate descriptive sensor-space representation, participant-associated effects accounted for 72.24% of the balanced standardized centroid sum of squares, compared with 2.04% for vowel-associated effects; between-participant same-vowel distances exceeded within-participant across-vowel distances for all 16 participants. An exploratory MDM analysis comprising 9,616 genuine refits across training cohorts of 3-15 participants showed no monotonic performance gain. Within this dataset and protocol, evidence for reliable cross-subject five-vowel decoding is limited. The benchmark provides a reproducible chain from source rows to retained epochs, predictions, participant-level metrics, multiplicity-adjusted inference, and bounded diagnostic analyses.

Best-of-$N$ TTS Evaluation is Confounded by ASR Family Alignment

Taehyung Yu, Seongjae Kang
摘要

Best-of-$N$ (BoN) inference improves content consistency in zero-shot text-to-speech by selecting among multiple candidates with an automatic speech recognition (ASR) verifier. We identify an evaluation confound: the apparent quality of a verifier depends strongly on the ASR family used for evaluation. On LibriSpeech-PC with F5-TTS, verifier rankings vary substantially across Whisper, wav2vec 2.0, and HuBERT evaluators, while same-family verifier and evaluator pairs recover considerably more oracle headroom than cross-family pairs despite highly similar representations. This pattern suggests identity- or lineage-level coupling rather than general representational similarity. To mitigate this bias, we propose two cross-family rank ensembles: rank averaging and conjunctive max-rank. Both improve mean word error rate across independent evaluators without degrading automatic similarity or quality metrics, and the best ensemble achieves a $12\%$ relative WER reduction over F5-TTS at $N=10$. These findings motivate cross-evaluator triangulation as a more reliable default for reporting BoN TTS performance.

Efficient Audio Enhancement with a Differentiable Psychoacoustic Loss

Wallace Abreu, Bernardo V. Miranda, Luiz W. P. Biscainho
摘要

Audio enhancement consists of improving the perceived quality of audio signals. Initially, with the aim of addressing bandwidth extension, this work proposes \(AEROMamba_{P}\), an efficient variant of the AERO super-resolution architecture where attention and LSTM layers are replaced by the Mamba state-space model, and which incorporates a newly developed differentiable perceptual loss derived from the Perceptual Audio Quality Measure (PAQM). During training, the architecture requires approximately 2-4x less GPU memory than the baseline; during inference, it achieves a 14x speedup while using only one-fifth of the GPU memory. When upsampling both a piano dataset and MUSDB18 from 11.025 kHz to 44.1 kHz, subjective listening tests show that \(AEROMamba_{P}\) outperforms AERO by 15% in perceived quality scores. Next, to handle the enhancement of audio signals that have been highly compressed by lossy coding, it is further proposed \(AEROMamba_{PS}\), which applies the same framework but replaces STFT reconstruction losses with the PAQM loss, specifically to enhance MP3 encoded audio at 32 kbps. In listening evaluations, \(AEROMamba_{PS}\) achieves 52% higher quality rating than \(AEROMamba_{P}\) when restoring compressed audio. These results demonstrate that PAQM-driven training coupled with lightweight state-space modeling yields high perceptual quality and computational efficiency in both band-limited and compressed audio scenarios.

Towards Real-world Environment-aware Zero-shot Text-to-speech Synthesis via Disentangled Audio Infilling

Ye-Xin Lu, Xin Wang, Yang Ai, Hui-Peng Du, Zhen-Hua Ling, Junichi Yamagishi
摘要

Recent zero-shot text-to-speech (TTS) systems achieve remarkable naturalness and speaker similarity but typically require high-quality speaker prompts and either strip away or entangle the acoustic environment with speaker characteristics, limiting their real-world applicability. We present an extended DAIEN-TTS, an environment-aware zero-shot TTS framework that disentangles and jointly models speech, background noise, and reverberation, enabling independent control over timbre and acoustic environment through separate speaker and environment prompts. Built upon the flow-matching-based F5-TTS, it uses a speech-environment separation module to decompose environmental speech into speech, noise, and reverberation components, which are injected into the Diffusion Transformer for environment-aware generation. Training uses simulated data constructed by mixing clean speech with noise and room impulse responses, together with a cross-speaker conditioning strategy that suppresses speaker information leakage from the environment branch. When real-world data are available, the system can be further fine-tuned to bridge the simulated-to-real domain this http URL inference, a triple classifier-free guidance mechanism enables fine-grained control over speech, noise, and reverberation, and a signal-to-noise-ratio adaptation strategy aligns the synthesized speech with the environment prompt. Experiments on simulated and real-world test sets show that DAIEN-TTS generates environmental personalized speech with high naturalness, strong speaker similarity, and faithful noise and reverberation reproduction, while offering controllability beyond prior environment-aware TTS systems.

GROW: Group-Relative Advantage-Weighted On-Policy Reinforcement Learning of Autoregressive-Diffusion Text-to-Speech model

摘要

Reinforcement learning for flow-matching text-to-speech is complicated by deterministic ODE sampling: trajectory-level policy-gradient methods typically convert the ODE into an SDE and track per-step likelihood ratios, introducing stochastic perturbations and substantial overhead. We propose GROW, a group-relative advantage-weighted on-policy RL method that acts directly on the standard flow-matching objective. For each prompt, GROW samples a group of on-policy utterances, separately standardizes intelligibility and speaker-similarity rewards within the group, and combines them to reweight flow-matching regression. A Wasserstein-2 velocity penalty anchors the updated model to a frozen pretrained reference. A group-mean reward baseline is introduced to convert reward weighting into advantage weighting. For strong pretrained TTS models with concentrated rewards, positive exponential weighting is dominated by reward-agnostic self-imitation, whereas a zero-mean signed advantage preserves effective within-group credit assignment. Instantiated on DiTAR and evaluated on LibriSpeech and Seed-TTS EN/ZH, GROW reduces average WER from 2.016 to 1.558 and raises speaker similarity from 0.676 to 0.715 while keeping UTMOS. With 10-NFE training rollouts and 32-NFE evaluation, GROW retains comparable performance while training 2.9x faster than 32-NFE DiTAR-GRPO. We will open-source complete GROW codes, faithful DiTAR reproduction, and all model checkpoints.

摘要

Developing speaker verification (SV) models that are robust to classroom noise and effective across both children and adult speakers is critical for AI tools supporting educational environments. In this study, we use a real-world English-speaking classrooms dataset containing partial speaker identity annotations, with most recordings remaining unlabeled. We adapt the WavLM-TDNN model for classroom SV, achieving average relative reductions in Equal Error Rate (EER) of 23.99% and 6.32% compared to the ECAPA-TDNN baseline and the ECAPA-TDNN model trained on classroom data, respectively. Additionally, we investigate two training strategies for SV in classroom settings: self-supervised learning (SSL) and a two-stage approach that first pre-trains with SSL and then fine-tunes with limited annotated data. Five-fold cross-validation demonstrates that the two-stage strategy consistently outperforms the SSL-only approach, achieving an average relative EER reduction of 13.39%.

Echo-Aware Modulation for Compact-Latent Frequency-Time Modeling in Lightweight Acoustic Echo Cancellation

Ye Ni, Ruiyu Liang, Qingyun Wang, Kai Xie, Cairong Zou, Björn W. Schuller
摘要

Existing lightweight acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) systems often combine linear AEC with Bark-domain DNN-based suppression to lower the computational footprint. In such systems, downsampling layers further compress the input features into a compact bottleneck representation, but this compression weakens frequency-time modeling capacity and degrades performance. To mitigate this limitation, we propose MSA-EchoLite, a lightweight Bark-domain AEC framework with an asymmetric dual-branch encoder and an echo-aware frequency-time modulation (EAM) module. The EAM module enriches the compressed bottleneck representation by modeling discrepancy and correlation cues between the dual-branch microphone and echo-related latent features. Experimental results show that the Bark-domain variant of MSA-EchoLite offers a better performance-complexity trade-off than its frequency-domain counterpart but is more sensitive to feature compression. With only 26.1% additional FLOPs over its non-EAM Bark-domain variant, its EAM-enhanced version achieves 99.1% of the PESQ of the frequency-domain counterpart, which requires nearly twice the FLOPs, and even surpasses it in SDR. Overall, MSA-EchoLite outperforms state-of-the-art lightweight AEC models while using only 0.2 M parameters and 100 M FLOPs/s.

Identity-Faithful Audio-Visual Target Speaker Extraction with QIANGDA and VOXBLINK2-AVSE

Peijun Yang, Zhan Jin, Juan Liu, Ming Li
摘要

Audio-visual target speaker extraction should return the speaker indicated by the video, yet a separator can ignore the visual cue and repeatedly output the acoustically dominant voice. We introduce QIANGDA, a Mandarin AV-TSE benchmark of jointly recorded real two-speaker mixtures with synchronized multi-view video. Each scene also contains preceding A-only and B-only stages that provide in-scene speaker references. It contains 77 scenes and 7,598 clips (11.84 hours), including 6,042 dual-annotated mixtures. After processing there leave 6,038 evaluable mixtures and 12,076 target-speaker rows. We additionally curate VOXBLINK2-AVSE from VoxBlink2, comprising 250,828 synchronized audio--lip-ROI pairs from 28,421 identities and 766.17 hours of speech. Our extractor uses frozen, 1,280-dimensional projected AV-HuBERT features, target-conditioned training, and layer-wise feature modulation. We jointly evaluate content with Qwen3-ASR-1.7B CER and target identity with WeSpeaker ResNet34 plus Overlapped Speech Detection (OSD). On the complete manifest, the best archived checkpoint obtains 0.2261 CER, 82.22% strict output correctness, and 69.53% both-output strict success.

dots.tts.edit: Precisely Controlled Speech Editing with a Continuous Autoregressive Model

摘要

Speech editing for content creation requires precise control over both what an edit should do and where it should apply. Free-form natural language provides a flexible interface for expressing edit requests, but its ambiguity may leave the intended operation, parameters, or target region underspecified. We study a precise and explicit interface for speech editing: a transcript-grounded structural edit instruction with XML-style tags explicitly specifies typed operations and localizes them to transcript spans or boundaries. This semantic timeline avoids explicit timestamp alignment and provides an externally inspectable contract for compositional edits. We instantiate the interface in this http URL , an editor adapted from the continuous autoregressive this http URL foundation model. Four representative speech-creation controls cover lexical content, affective expression, pitch and speaking-rate delivery, and temporal phrasing through text, emotion, prosody, and pause editing. Task-specific data pipelines construct operation- and scope-controlled pairs while retaining source-derived context outside each target region. We further introduce doteBench, a bilingual evaluation suite that measures precise instruction following, local preservation, and audio quality across the four controls and their composition. Experiments show leading overall instruction following and local preservation across its five editing categories, while audio quality remains comparable to existing open-source systems. Across three Seed-TTS-Eval shards, the model shows negligible differences from the base model in zero-shot TTS recognition error rate and speaker similarity. The code and model will be released soon.

Learning Music Style for Piano Arrangement Through Cross-Modal Bootstrapping

Jingwei Zhao, Gus Xia, Ziyu Wang, Ye Wang
摘要

What is music style? Though often described using text labels such as "swing," "classical," or "emotional," the real style remains implicit and hidden in concrete music examples. In this paper, we introduce a cross-modal framework that learns implicit music styles from raw audio and applies them to symbolic music generation. Inspired by BLIP-2, our model leverages a Querying Transformer (Q-Former) to extract style representations from a large, pre-trained audio language model (LM), and further applies them to condition a symbolic LM for generating piano arrangements. We adopt a two-stage training strategy: contrastive learning to align auditory style with symbolic expression, followed by generative modeling for music arrangement. Our model generates piano performances jointly conditioned on a lead sheet (content) and a reference audio example (style), enabling controllable and stylistically faithful arrangement. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in piano cover generation, style transfer, and audio-to-MIDI retrieval, achieving substantial improvements in style-aware alignment and music quality.

Language-Specialized Multi-Teacher On-Policy Distillation for Multilingual LLM-Based ASR

Yuan Xie, Jiaqi Song, Xianliang Wang, Ming Lei, Jie Gao, Jie Wu
摘要

Modern LLM-based ASR systems have established multilingual capability as a standard feature, leveraging large-scale multilingual corpora and LLMs' cross-lingual knowledge to achieve competitive performance across multilingual benchmarks. However, joint modeling of languages with heterogeneous acoustic, phonological, and lexical characteristics inevitably introduces optimization conflicts, undermining language-wise specialization. To address this challenge, we propose Language-Specialized Multi-Teacher On-Policy Distillation (LS-MOPD), which decouples language-specific knowledge acquisition from multilingual capability integration: language-specialized teachers are independently optimized via reinforcement learning (RL), after which their expertise is integrated into a generalist multilingual student through language routing and token-level multi-teacher distillation, thereby reducing direct cross-lingual optimization conflicts. We further explore two acoustic-prefix configurations, static and dynamic, to examine how teacher--student prefix consistency influences the efficacy of on-policy distillation. Experiments on benchmarks covering Mandarin, Mandarin subdialects, Cantonese, and English demonstrate that LS-MOPD substantially outperforms RL baselines and consistently surpasses the empirical performance envelope defined by best-performing RL teachers, revealing its potential to generalize beyond all teachers in multilingual ASR.

Why Pre-trained Models Fail: Feature Entanglement in Multi-modal Depression Detection

Xiangyu Zhang, Beena Ahmed, Julien Epps
摘要

Depression remains a pressing global mental health issue, driving considerable research into AI-driven detection approaches. While pre-trained models, particularly speech self-supervised models (SSL Models), have been applied to depression detection, they show unexpectedly poor performance without extensive data augmentation. Large Language Models (LLMs), despite their success across various domains, have not been explored in multi-modal depression detection. In this paper, we first establish an LLM-based system to investigate its potential in this task, uncovering fundamental limitations in handling multi-modal information. Through systematic analysis, we discover that the poor performance of pre-trained models stems from the conflation of high-level information, where \textcolor{black}{one of the important reasons is that} high-level features derived from both content and speech are mixed within pre-trained models model representations, making it challenging to establish effective decision boundaries. To address this, we propose an information separation framework that disentangles these features, significantly improving the performance of both SSL models and LLMs in depression detection. Our experiments validate this finding and demonstrate that the integration of separated features yields substantial improvements over existing approaches, providing new insights for developing more effective multi-modal depression detection systems.

Speech LLMs in Low-Resource Scenarios: Data Volume Requirements and the Impact of Pretraining on High-Resource Languages

摘要

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated potential in handling spoken inputs for high-resource languages, reaching state-of-the-art performance in various tasks. However, their applicability is still less explored in low-resource settings. This work investigates the use of Speech LLMs for low-resource Automatic Speech Recognition using the SLAM-ASR framework, where a trainable lightweight projector connects a speech encoder and a LLM. Firstly, we assess training data volume requirements to match Whisper-only performance, re-emphasizing the challenges of limited data. Secondly, we show that leveraging mono- or multilingual projectors pretrained on high-resource languages reduces the impact of data scarcity, especially with small training sets. Using multilingual LLMs (EuroLLM, Salamandra) with whisper-large-v3-turbo, we evaluate performance on several public benchmarks, providing insights for future research on optimizing Speech LLMs for low-resource languages and multilinguality.

MAGENTA: Magnitude and Geometry-Enhanced Training Approach for Long-Tailed Sound Event Localization and Detection

Jun-Wei Yeow, Ee-Leng Tan, Santi Peksi, Woon-Seng Gan
摘要

Deep learning-based Sound Event Localization and Detection (SELD) systems suffer severe performance degradation in real-world, long-tailed acoustic environments. Standard continuous regression objectives heavily bias learning toward frequent classes, causing rare events to be systematically under-recognized, an optimization bottleneck we term detection timidity. To overcome this, we propose MAGENTA (Magnitude And Geometry-ENhanced Training Approach), an architecture-agnostic loss framework that geometrically decomposes the regression error into orthogonal radial (activity) and angular (localization) components. Unlike standard methods that rely on static frequency weights, MAGENTA incorporates an intrinsic, difficulty-driven annealing mechanism. By decoupling the objective to independently modulate active detection and inactive suppression, the system can adaptively boost recall for difficult tail classes while modulating inactive penalties to prevent spurious rare-event detections. Evaluations on the STARSS23 dataset demonstrate that MAGENTA yields a 20.5% relative reduction in the aggregated SELD error, effectively recovering tail class performance without compromising head class precision. Unfolded Recursive Expectation-Maximization Neural Network For Speaker Tracking

Rina Veler, Sharon Gannot
摘要

We propose a deep unfolded REM network for robust tracking of a single moving speaker in mild reverberant environments. Unlike classical REM algorithms, which rely on fixed-step-size decay schedules, the proposed architecture learns an adaptive update policy by unfolding the iterative procedure into differentiable layers. We introduce a Step Size Network that leverages FiLM and PE to dynamically adjust the recursion weights based on temporal context and convergence state. Experimental results for tracking a single speaker under reverberant conditions demonstrate that the proposed unfolded network outperforms the classical CREM baseline, which employs a spatial grid search to map the estimated centroids to physical positions. In the single-speaker tracking task, the proposed method achieves a lower RMSE than the CREM baseline, highlighting its potential for dynamic acoustic scenarios.

SwanTale: Unified Multi-Speaker Speech and Audio Generation for Instruct and Zero-Shot Tasks

Yu Zhang, Ruiqi Li, Changhao Pan, Ke Lei, Xiang Yin, Cheng Yang
摘要

Speech and audio generation is often needed in animation dubbing, audio drama, movies, advertising, games, podcasts, and short-video production. In these scenarios, creators may need to design voices without reference recordings, control speaker styles with natural language, support acoustic scenes with environments and audio effects, and later reuse the designed voices. Therefore, it is important to support multi-speaker speech and audio generation for both instruct and zero-shot tasks. The instruct task requires a caption of the environment, speaker styles, and fine-grained content, while the zero-shot task uses reference audio together with the same fine-grained content. We address these tasks from both the data and model sides. First, we propose SwanData-Caption, which cleans raw speech and audio data, adds targeted synthetic coverage, and annotates diverse and accurate multi-level captions. Then, we propose SwanTale, a multi-speaker expressive speech and audio generation model that supports both zero-shot and instruct tasks. We introduce SwanVAE to support high-quality multi-audio-modality generation. Then, we adopt reward-conditioned quality control and Engram conditioning, along with Unified MoE for multi-task and multi-audio-modality modeling. In addition, we use curriculum learning and GRPO post-training to let the model progressively learn and strengthen its capabilities. Experimental results show that SwanTale leads on multiple key zero-shot and instruct metrics, achieves the best expressiveness scores in both tasks, and supports complex instruct generation involving multi-speaker speech and audio. 摘要

In this paper, we present our studies and experiments carried out for the task 1 of the Challenge and Workshop on Multilingual Conversational Speech Language Model (MLC-SLM), which focuses on advancing multilingual conversational speech recognition through the development of speech language models architectures. Given the increasing relevance of real-world conversational data for building robust Spoken Dialogue Systems, we explore three approaches to multilingual ASR. First, we conduct an evaluation of the official baseline to better understand its strengths and limitations, by training two projectors (linear and qformer) with different foundation models. Second we leverage the SLAM-ASR framework to train a custom multilingual linear projector. Finally we investigate the role of contrastive learning and the extended conversational context in enhancing the robustness of recognition.

Talker-T2AV: Joint Talking Audio-Video Generation with Autoregressive Diffusion Modeling

摘要

Joint audio-video generation models have shown that unified generation yields stronger cross-modal coherence than cascaded approaches. However, existing models couple modalities throughout denoising via pervasive attention, treating high-level semantics and low-level details in a fully entangled manner. This is suboptimal for talking head synthesis: while audio and facial motion are semantically correlated, their low-level realizations (acoustic signals and visual textures) follow distinct rendering processes. Enforcing joint modeling across all levels causes unnecessary entanglement and reduces efficiency. We propose Talker-T2AV, an autoregressive diffusion framework where high-level cross-modal modeling occurs in a shared backbone, while low-level refinement uses modality-specific decoders. A shared autoregressive language model jointly reasons over audio and video in a unified patch-level token space. Two lightweight diffusion transformer heads decode the hidden states into frame-level audio and video latents. Experiments on talking portrait benchmarks show Talker-T2AV outperforms dual-branch baselines in lip-sync accuracy, video quality, and audio quality, achieving stronger cross-modal consistency than cascaded pipelines.

Fretiq: Browser-Native Electric Guitar String Classification via Engineered Spectral Features and Held-Out Free-Play Evaluation

Aadi Garg
摘要

Identifying which string produces a given pitch in monophonic electric guitar audio is a classification challenge: a single pitch can often be produced on multiple strings, with timbral differences largely imperceptible to untrained humans. We present Fretiq, a preliminary single-instrument, single-player browser-based string classification system using a 26-dimensional feature representation of frequency band energies, spectral statistics, and 13 Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients. Across five seeds, a shuffled frame-level validation split yields 97.25 +/- 0.32 percent accuracy, with an ablation study identifying MFCCs as the primary accuracy driver (92.09 +/- 0.50 percent without MFCCs). We introduce Comparison Training, a data collection method recording same-pitch pairs on adjacent strings in deliberate alternation. An initial shuffled-split comparison found no net benefit but was confounded by non-comparable validation sets across conditions. A corrected matched evaluation, using an identical recording session held out from training and model selection, shows including comparison-session data improves accuracy by 25.78 +/- 1.46 percentage points; a size-matched control shows this is not explained by training-set size alone. A recording-session-held-out evaluation yields 86.53 +/- 1.23 percent accuracy, closely matching an independently collected free-play evaluation (87.8 percent), both well below the shuffled-split figure, showing shuffled validation substantially overestimates real generalization here. We describe the feature extraction pipeline in Python and TypeScript for training-inference parity and document two implementation failure modes. The system runs entirely in-browser with no specialized hardware required.

Reinforcement Learning with Evolving Rubrics as Rewards for Audio Reasoning

Fangxu Yu, Tao Feng, Dehai Min, Zinan Lin, Weijia Xu, Michael Xu, Philip S. Yu, Ge Liu, Tianyi Zhou
摘要

Audio reasoning is essential for machine understanding of the acoustic world. Reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards can elicit such reasoning, yet existing reward designs are complementary in their limitations: outcome-based rewards supervise only the final answer and let the model reach it without attending to the audio, whereas process-based rewards score the reasoning itself but rely on coarse, hand-crafted, and fixed criteria that neither adapt to each question nor stay grounded in the acoustic evidence. Moreover, questions differ in what they demand, with some hinging on perception and others on multi-step reasoning, and any static criterion weakens as the policy improves. Supervising the reasoning process with fine-grained, audio-grounded, and adaptive rewards is therefore crucial, yet challenging since such rewards are impractical to design by hand for every sample. To this end, we introduce AudioRubrics, a reinforcement learning framework that supervises audio reasoning with self-evolving, audio-grounded rubric rewards. AudioRubrics synthesizes per-sample rubrics from the raw waveform and, conditioned on the model's own rollouts, regenerates and reweights criteria per group, supplying a continuous learning signal that keeps targeting the current policy's weaknesses as static criteria saturate. Comprehensive evaluations across three audio reasoning benchmarks reveal that AudioRubrics substantially outperforms a wide range of open-source and training-based baselines. Furthermore, our analysis shows that the gains scale with the capability of the rubric generator and judge, and AudioRubrics converges to a stable reasoning length that avoids both degenerate collapse and unbounded growth. The improvement in audio perception further demonstrates the effectiveness of anchoring supervision in the acoustic evidence. Our project page is available at this https URL .

摘要

Neural audio codecs serve as fundamental tokenizers for LLM-based audio generation. While semantic priors are widely exploited to enhance linguistic intelligibility, the integration of explicit acoustic priors remains underexplored, limiting synthesis fidelity in frequency-sensitive domains. To address this gap, we introduce MeloCodec, a novel framework designed to effectively incorporate melodic priors, a critical form of acoustic information for singing. To address the optimization instability typically caused by the direct fusion of such explicit priors, we propose a Tokenize-then-Fuse paradigm that pre-trains a discrete melodic branch to lock in structures before feature fusion. To robustly realize this paradigm, we further propose a two-stage training strategy that prevents codebook collapse and ensures stable convergence. Experiments show that MeloCodec outperforms baselines in singing voice representation, improving pitch consistency and enabling controllable pitch manipulation with minimal timbre degradation.

DDSynth-RL: Audio Synthesizer Inversion via Discrete Diffusion with Reinforcement Learning

Tristan Wu, Daniel Chin, Junan Zhang, Junyan Jiang, Yansen Jing, Gus Xia
摘要

Synthesizer inversion is challenging for two main reasons: 1) Distinct parameter configurations can produce perceptually similar sounds. 2) Parameter-space losses often fail to reflect rendered audio similarity, while the synthesizer being a non-differentiable black box prevents simple audio-domain supervision. To address the one-to-many mapping induced by the first challenge, we formulate synthesizer inversion as conditional generation over discrete synthesizer parameters and use masked discrete diffusion as the generator. This treatment additionally avoids the fixed-order assumption of autoregressive models and the continuous-relaxation mismatch of flow matching when modeling categorical synthesizer controls. To address the second challenge, we further fine-tune the model with GRPO-style audio-domain rewards computed from rendered outputs. Experiments on Dexed show that, after supervised training, the discrete diffusion model is competitive with autoregressive and flow-matching baselines, and reward-based fine-tuning further improves out-of-domain audio matching performance. Calliphony: A Calligraphy-Driven Interface for Real-Time Generative Music Performance

Tristan Wu, Ruiji Yu, Gus Xia
摘要

While music generative models have recently gained significant attention, how they can be effectively integrated into live music performances still requires further exploration. This paper presents Calliphony, a calligraphy-driven interface for real-time generative music performance. Specifically, we build a low-latency pipeline that captures brush motion with an attachable sensor and maps it to control signals for real-time symbolic music generation. Using a generative model, the system produces multi-track MIDI in performance settings, while brush-derived control signals constrain event timing and activate additional musical layers. The generated melody is then extended with real-time harmony and additional voices, and finally rendered through a DAW for live staging. Calliphony contributes: (1) a performance-oriented prototype that uses calligraphic motion as an external control layer for a real-time symbolic music generation model, controlling note density, pitch constraints, and accompaniment-layer activation; and (2) a cross-modal performance scenario that extends calligraphy beyond a primarily visual practice into an audiovisual, AI-assisted setting.

Towards More Expressive Spoken LLMs: Fine-Grained Intent Benchmarking and Acoustic-Lexical Decoupled Policy Optimization

Xiang Lin, Tian-Hao Zhang, Chunfeng Wang, Zhou Pan, Kun Zhan, Liang Li
摘要

Spoken emotional dialogue requires a model to understand a user's spoken input and generate a response that is both semantically appropriate and emotionally expressive. This is challenging because communicative intent may be stated explicitly in lexical content or conveyed more implicitly through paralinguistic cues, which can complement or diverge from the words themselves. However, two limitations constrain progress in this area: the scarcity of benchmarks that distinguish these intent expressions, and the lack of reinforcement learning objectives that jointly account for response quality and emotional expression. To address the lack of suitable benchmarks, we introduce ParaIntent, a Chinese benchmark comprising 14 intent categories with balanced explicit and implicit samples, together with a multidimensional evaluation protocol covering intent fulfillment, response quality, and emotional expression. For policy optimization, existing approaches either use a shared objective for text and speech or apply reinforcement learning to only one modality, leaving modality-specific learning signals entangled within policy optimization. Motivated by this, we propose Acoustic-Lexical Decoupled Policy Optimization (ALPO), which computes independent textual and acoustic advantages and routes them to the corresponding text and speech tokens within a unified rollout. Under identical reward functions and training budgets, ALPO improves over standard GRPO on most automatic metrics and achieves the best subjective results among the fine-tuned variants, with particularly clear gains in emotional expressiveness on both the synthetic and human-recorded test sets.

CLASVS: Continuous-Latent Autoregression for Melody-Preserving Lyric Editing in Singing Voice Synthesis

Yizhong Geng, Tian-Hao Zhang, Chunfeng Wang, Wenxin Fu, Yingming Gao, Ruimin Wang, Zhou Pan, Kun Zhan, Liang Li, Ya Li
摘要

Reference-conditioned melody-preserving lyric editing replaces words while retaining a performance's timing, singer identity, and naturalness. Continuous-latent autoregression avoids finite codebooks and offers stepwise generation with learned stopping. Editing creates a conflict absent from ordinary reconstruction: training pairs reference cues with original lyrics, whereas inference asks revised lyrics to override source-lyric-correlated cues; one source-following patch can propagate through AR history. We introduce CLASVS. Its State-Control-Transition (SCT) routing keeps target-lyric and reference-melody controls persistent, returns semantic feedback on phonetic progress to the causal planner, and confines the previous latent patch to the local Transition. Progressive State-Control Grounding (PSCG) learns this contract through paired-edit-free, content-consistent Mandarin reconstruction. On two Mandarin benchmarks, CLASVS improves all four operations over discrete-AR Vevo2 and reduces macro-PER by 46.2%, while maintaining melody, singer similarity, and perceptual quality. Together, these results establish a strong continuous-AR operating point for score-annotation-free lyric edits and a basis for broader stepwise control. Multi-Task Multi-Frame Visual Piano Transcription

Yonghyun Kim, Hoyeol Sohn, Juhan Nam, Alexander Lerch
摘要

Audio-based piano transcription performs well on onset, pitch, and velocity, but the sustain pedal lets sound persist long after key release, so audio systems predict pedal-extended offsets rather than physical key release. Yet existing Visual Piano Transcription (VPT) systems focus on onset detection from short video windows, offset accuracy lags onset by a wide margin, and note-level velocity has not been reported. To address these gaps, we present V2N (Video to Notes), the first complete VPT system: a shared temporal backbone feeds task-specific heads for onset, offset, key hold, and velocity, jointly trained with per-frame supervision rather than only at the window center. Ablations show that multi-task supervision enables offset and velocity prediction while improving onset accuracy; longer temporal context yields further improvements. V2N sets new state-of-the-art results on PianoVAM and R3.

On the Geometry of Music Bandwidth Extension in Latent Spaces of Audio Codecs

Hendrik Vincent Koops, Hao Hao Tan, Elio Quinton
摘要

Recent audio restoration increasingly relies on large-scale conditional latent generative modeling, including diffusion, Schrodinger Bridges, and Flow Matching variants, to invert degradations such as bandwidth limitation or noise. We present an analysis of the performance of various state-of-the-art methods compared to simple arithmetic transformations in the latent spaces of multiple neural codecs for musical bandwidth extension. We show that estimating a single transport vector between the clean and degraded latent centroids on a reference set, and adding it to degraded latents, can yield restoration performance competitive with large diffusion models. This suggests, first, that some neural codec latent spaces exhibit structure aligned with audio bandwidth; and second, that in such cases complex conditional models may offer only limited gains over a simple vector addition. We argue that these findings reveal an interesting avenue for future research whereby models could take advantage of the latent space structure in order to offer greater training and parameter efficiency, and overall better performance. Additionally, we propose to consider this simple arithmetic transformation as a baseline for music bandwidth extension research, as it allows an assessment of the contribution of learnable parameters towards restoration performance.

AI-Based Sound Effect Generation: A Narrative Review of Generative Models Across Input Modalities

Sandy Abdo, Bill Kapralos, Priyamvada Tripathi, KC Collins, Adam Dubrowski
摘要

Sound effects play a crucial role in conveying actions, events, and environmental cues across digital applications, often requiring a high degree of variation and contextual adaptability. Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven audio generative models are rapidly growing in popularity and have the potential to transform the way sound is synthesized and used across various applications. In response to this growing momentum, this chapter reviews and analyzes recent AI-based generative models for sound effect synthesis, with a focus on how different input modalities (text, visual, audio, and multimodal) affect the quality, controllability, and contextual relevance of the generated audio. It examines 30 peer-reviewed articles sourced from Google Scholar, IEEE Xplore, and the ACM Digital Library, exploring the evolution of AI generative models over the past five years. The results show that multiple models achieved state-of-the-art performance, producing high-fidelity, semantically aligned, and increasingly temporally coherent sound effects across tasks. However, despite these advances, the review identifies persistent challenges, including limitations in temporal synchronization for complex multi-event scenarios, gaps between objective metrics and human perception, and trade-offs between controllability and generative diversity. Overall, the chapter highlights that AI-driven sound effect generation is progressing toward more adaptive, scalable, and context-aware systems, offering significant implications for future sound design workflows and interactive media applications.

Equivariant Music Transformer

Zixun Guo, Simon Dixon
摘要

Humans recognize a musical passage even when it is shifted in time or transposed in pitch, indicating a notion of equivariance in the representation space. Our analysis, however, shows that standard music transformers map such time-shifted or pitch-transposed inputs onto uncorrelated representations: these models become progressively less equivariant as they scale in size or train longer. This suggests that in standard music transformers, additional model capacity is allocated to memorizing absolute patterns rather than capturing shared musical structures. In this paper, we propose the Equivariant Music Transformer (EMT), which enforces equivariance through self-distillation by jointly optimizing a next-token-prediction and an auxiliary equivariance regularization loss. We find that the additional equivariance loss acts as a beneficial regularizer, simultaneously improving next-token prediction and producing equivariant latent representations. Through both objective and subjective evaluations, EMT demonstrates superior equivariance and generative capability compared to data augmentation, feature engineering, and state-of-the-art (SOTA) baselines. More broadly, our findings reveal that standard language modeling methods alone do not capture music's translational symmetries, and dedicated inductive biases are required to produce better music representations. The code, weights and demos are available online.

Transfer Learning for Avian Bioacoustics under Sparse Positive Labels

Dhyey Patel, Yunting Yin
摘要

Passive acoustic monitoring is an important tool for biodiversity assessment and wildlife conservation because it supports continuous and non-invasive monitoring of species across large spatial and temporal scales. Robust monitoring remains challenging because many datasets contain sparse positive labels, where species presences may be confirmed while unannotated species cannot be assumed absent. In this work, we study transfer learning under sparse positive labels using BirdCLEF+ 2026 as a target benchmark and BirdCLEF 2021, iNatSounds, WABAD, and BirdSet as external bioacoustic sources. We introduce a multi-source reliability framework that models heterogeneous bioacoustic datasets as distinct supervision sources with differing reliability. Our approach achieves 0.584 macro average precision and 0.860 macro AUC on public BirdCLEF+ 2026 validation labels while outperforming naive source pooling strategies. The strongest gains arise from passive acoustic monitoring datasets and biologically informed source selection. Our findings suggest that transfer learning in bioacoustics is fundamentally a weak supervision and negative transfer problem.

Agogic: Performance-Timed Music Tokens for LLM-Native Text-to-Symbolic-Music Generation

摘要

Text-to-music language models begin with a choice usually made by default: how to tokenize music. Normally entangled with backbone, data, and recipe, its effect has never been measured in isolation. We fix pretrained Qwen3.5 (0.8B-27B), data, budget, and decoding, and swap only the representation across seven tokenizations, anchoring texture metrics to each representation's model-free ceiling. The ordering is clean and surprising: representation, not model size, is the binding variable for distributional fidelity. Scaling the backbone 34x barely moves Frechet Music Distance (FMD), whereas switching representation halves it. PMT, a performance-resolution stream we release (10 ms timing, per-note velocity, multi-track texture; 609 symbols), reaches FMD 159 at 0.8B against 272-286 for beat grids (1.7-1.8x lower, up to 2.8x elsewhere; non-overlapping bootstrap CIs), so a 0.8B performance-resolution model beats a 27B beat grid. It reappears on a 26M from-scratch backbone and a second performance-resolution tokenizer: a property of the class, not one lucky vocabulary. Nor is it a finer-lattice artifact: snapping PMT's onsets to the beat grids' resolution still leaves it 67-129 FMD ahead of both (n=500). The effect is distributional; whether it is audible is a separate question, left open by our probe, with a human study pre-registered. Native caption adherence is weak but separable: a lightweight decode-time constraint doubles instrument-F1 (.28 to .60) and Correct-Key (.16 to .35) at no distributional cost. We release the harness, 25+ checkpoints, two corpora (86.6k aligned across caption/MIDI/ABC/audio; 6.25M captioned, the largest for music), and an imprinting diagnostic: published text-to-MIDI systems reproduce their training distribution near-invariant to the caption (72% vs. 71% chord-time on disjoint domains). The field's next representation claim can now be measured, not asserted.

Crowdsourced Multilingual Speech Intelligibility Testing

With the advent of generative audio features, there is an increasing need for rapid evaluation of their impact on speech intelligibility. Beyond the existing laboratory measures, which are expensive and do not scale well, there has been comparatively little work on crowdsourced assessment of intelligibility. Standards and recommendations are yet to be defined, and publicly available multilingual test materials are lacking. In response to this challenge, we propose an approach for a crowdsourced intelligibility assessment. We detail the test design, the collection and public release of the multilingual speech data, and the results of our early experiments.

摘要

Objective speech-quality metrics are widely used to assess codec performance. However, for neural codecs, it is often unclear which metrics provide reliable quality estimates. To address this, we evaluated 45 objective metrics by correlating their scores with subjective listening scores for clean speech across 17 codec conditions. Neural-based metrics such as scoreq and utmos achieved the highest Pearson correlations with subjective scores. Further analysis across different subjective quality ranges revealed that non-intrusive metrics tend to saturate at high subjective quality levels.

PASE: Leveraging the Phonological Prior of WavLM for Low-Hallucination Generative Speech Enhancement

Xiaobin Rong, Qinwen Hu, Mansur Yesilbursa, Kamil Wojcicki, Jing Lu
摘要

Generative models have shown remarkable performance in speech enhancement (SE), achieving superior perceptual quality over traditional discriminative approaches. However, existing generative SE approaches often overlook the risk of hallucination under severe noise, leading to incorrect spoken content or inconsistent speaker characteristics, which we term linguistic and acoustic hallucinations, respectively. We argue that linguistic hallucination stems from models' failure to constrain valid phonological structures and it is a more fundamental challenge. While language models (LMs) are well-suited for capturing the underlying speech structure through modeling the distribution of discrete tokens, existing approaches are limited in learning from noise-corrupted representations, which can lead to contaminated priors and hallucinations. To overcome these limitations, we propose the Phonologically Anchored Speech Enhancer (PASE), a generative SE framework that leverages the robust phonological prior embedded in the pre-trained WavLM model to mitigate hallucinations. First, we adapt WavLM into a denoising expert via representation distillation to clean its final-layer features. Guided by the model's intrinsic phonological prior, this process enables robust denoising while minimizing linguistic hallucinations. To further reduce acoustic hallucinations, we train the vocoder with a dual-stream representation: the high-level phonetic representation provides clean linguistic content, while a low-level acoustic representation retains speaker identity and prosody. Experimental results demonstrate that PASE not only surpasses state-of-the-art discriminative models in perceptual quality, but also significantly outperforms prior generative models with substantially lower linguistic and acoustic hallucinations.

摘要

Achieving high perceptual quality without hallucination remains a challenge in generative speech enhancement (SE). A representative approach, PASE, is robust to hallucination but has limited perceptual quality under adverse conditions. We propose StuPASE, built upon PASE to achieve studio-level quality while retaining its low-hallucination property. First, we show that finetuning PASE with dry targets rather than targets containing simulated early reflections substantially improves dereverberation. Second, to address performance limitations under strong additive noise, we replace the GAN-based generative module in PASE with a flow-matching module, enabling studio-quality generation even under highly challenging conditions. Experiments demonstrate that StuPASE consistently produces perceptually high-quality speech while maintaining low hallucination, outperforming state-of-the-art SE methods. What Is Sonification? Toward a Philosophy of Sonification

Rubén García-Benito
摘要

Sonification operates across scientific, artistic, and design contexts, yet its identity remains conceptually ambiguous: is it music, a scientific method, or a hybrid practice? This paper presents a philosophical framework that treats sonification as a coherent, transcategorical practice. Drawing on Gustavo Bueno's materialist gnoseology, we identify its operative core through systematic data-to-sound relationships that define its technical identity. Complementing this with Gilbert Simondon's philosophy of individuation, we show conceptually how sonification adapts across contexts while preserving its operative structure. By distinguishing between technical identity and pragmatic use, this framework clarifies the relationship between sonification, music, and aesthetics, providing researchers and practitioners with a philosophical framework to navigate the field's diversity while maintaining its epistemic and operational integrity.

Audio-visual instance segmentation (AVIS) requires accurately identifying and tracking individual sounding objects with pixel-level masks. Existing methods struggle to match overlapping acoustic events with visual instances and handle asynchronous audio-visual dynamics. Therefore, two critical questions arise: how can a model establish precise correspondence between overlapping sound sources and visual instances, and how can a model maintain robust tracking when audio and visual signals are temporally misaligned? This paper proposes Hear to See (H2S), addressing these challenges through two mechanisms. Sonic seasoning research has shown that listeners attribute systematic gustatory and emotional meaning to sound, and text-to-music generative artificial intelligence has recently been used to render gustatory prompts as musical stimuli. Whether the taste-sound correspondences acquired by such models hold beyond the cultural context in which they were validated remains untested. We extended a single-country study to a three-country online experiment conducted in Argentina, Italy, and Japan (N = 361). Participants first indicated their preference between base and fine-tuned MusicGen excerpts generated from four taste prompts (sweet, sour, bitter, salty), and then rated fine-tuned excerpts on twelve taste, emotion, and thermal descriptors. Preference for the fine-tuned model was confirmed in Argentina and Italy but not in Japan, and the salty prompt yielded the weakest correspondence in all three cohorts. Ratings differed substantially between countries, yet the main effect of country was no longer detectable once ratings had been standardized within participant, whereas the interactions characterizing the mapping of prompts onto descriptors remained essentially unchanged. Much of the apparent cross-cultural divergence is therefore attributable to differences in scale use; a structural component nevertheless persists. In addition an exploratory factor analysis indicated that the twelve descriptors were organized along different latent dimensions in each cohort. These results indicate that cross-cultural variation in AI-mediated sonic seasoning operates at two levels: the overall level at which taste is attributed to a given stimulus, and the relational structure of those attributions. Evaluations of generative music systems across populations should accordingly distinguish response-style bias from genuine perceptual reorganization.

MIDI-LLM: Improving Text-to-MIDI Music Generation via Adapting Large Language Models

Shih-Lun Wu, Dave Carlton, Ryan Miyakawa, Yoon Kim, Chris Donahue, Cheng-Zhi Anna Huang
摘要

We present MIDI-LLM, a recipe that improves multitrack text-to-MIDI generation via adapting Large Language Models (LLMs). MIDI-LLM expands an LLM's text vocabulary to include MIDI tokens and employs a two-stage training pipeline: (i) unimodal continued pretraining on music-adjacent text and standalone MIDIs, and (ii) multimodal supervised finetuning on text-MIDI pairs. Our instantiation of MIDI-LLM based on Llama 3.2 (1B) outperforms the recent Text2midi model in both text control and musical quality, and readily integrates with optimized inference ecosystems like vLLM. To align with real-world songwriting workflows, we further finetune our MIDI-LLM on the TheoryTab dataset for text-conditioned lead sheet (i.e., melody + chords) generation and infilling. A comprehensive ablation study validates the synergy between LLM text pretraining, standalone MIDI pretraining, and supervised text-to-MIDI finetuning. Finally, an in-the-wild blind user study conducted in a real-world creative workflow at scale with 58 Hookpad Aria users and 4,002 generated outputs demonstrates that our MIDI-LLM achieves the highest acceptance rate in zero-to-one lead sheet generation over baselines without text control or LLM pretraining, confirming its efficacy in human-AI music co-creation.

Neural Morphing: Sequence-Optimized Token-Level Morphing in Neural Audio Codecs

Emmanouil Karystinaios
摘要

Neural audio codecs were originally developed for high-fidelity compression; however, their latent token representations and expressive decoders also constitute a powerful substrate for controllable audio transformation. This work introduces Neural Morphing, a training-free token-domain audio effect that selects residual-vector-quantized (RVQ) token grains from a user palette and decodes the edited stream through a pretrained codec. The method combines an RVQ-group transfer policy that separates coarse, middle, and fine codebook groups with a continuity-constrained sequence matcher that replaces independent greedy selection with bounded beam search. The intended output is a controlled hybrid: the source preserves rhythmic organization while the palette contributes timbral color and residual detail. We focus on the implementation and realtime behavior of a deployable VST3/AU system, including chunked rendering, palette-size scaling, and backend health checks.

P-MUSE: Prompt-MIDI-Optional Model for Unified Instrumental Music Synthesis and Editing

摘要

MIDI-to-Music system renders the melody and rhythm of a target MIDI sequence into musical segment while cloning instrument timbre from a prompt recording. Existing systems typically adopt one of two distinct paradigms: conditional generation with prompt audio alone, which remains applicable when aligned prompt MIDI is unavailable, and In-Context Learning with paired prompt audio and MIDI, which exploits cross-modal alignment for stronger control on MIDI following and timbre similarity. We introduce P-MUSE, an instrumental MIDI-to-Music framework that unifies both paradigms via a multi-stage Curriculum-Learning supporting prompt-MIDI-optional inputs. P-MUSE further unifies music generation and local editing through a shared fill-in-the-middle formulation. Grounded in theoretical analysis and empirical study, we propose a phase-aware classifier-free guidance scheduling principle for Transcription-to-Audio systems, alongside a Tail-Drop strategy. Finally, to advance research in this field, we establish the first comprehensive benchmark, covering various prompt modes, generation/editing tasks, and four representative instruments: piano, guitar, bass, and drums. Audio-Visual World Models: Learning Physically Grounded Multisensory Dynamics

Jiahua Wang, Leqi Zheng, Jialong Wu, Yaoxin Mao, Shijie Cheng
摘要

World models simulate environmental dynamics to enable embodied agents to plan and reason about future states. While real-world perception is inherently multimodal, existing approaches focus primarily on visual observations, leaving crucial spatial and temporal acoustic cues underexplored. In this work, we present a unified formulation of Audio-Visual World Models (AVWM), casting multimodal environment simulation under action control as a partially observable Markov decision process with synchronized audio-visual observations. As a foundational benchmark, we construct AVW-4k, comprising 30 hours of action-annotated binaural audio-visual trajectories across 76 indoor environments. To capture these physically grounded multisensory dynamics, we propose AV-CDiT (Audio-Visual Conditional Diffusion Transformer), featuring a novel modality expert architecture that balances visual and auditory learning, optimized via a three-stage training strategy. Extensive experiments demonstrate that AV-CDiT achieves high-fidelity prediction across both visual and auditory modalities. Furthermore, we validate its practical utility in embodied navigation, showing that AVWM significantly enhances a pretrained agent in continuous audio-visual navigation tasks.

摘要

In this paper, we introduce noise-aware self-supervised learning (NA-SSL) models for noise-aware anomalous sound detection (NA-ASD). NA-ASD is an ASD task with two-channel audio recordings, where one microphone is located close to the target machine and the other is located farther away to capture noise. For this task, we simulate two-channel recordings using diverse audio datasets and train NA-SSL models to extract clean SSL representations of the close-microphone signal by using the far-microphone recording dominated by background noise as auxiliary information. The NA-SSL models are then used as frontends in the standard ASD framework. Our experimental evaluation on the DCASE 2026 Challenge Task 2 development dataset demonstrates the effectiveness of the NA-SSL framework across three base SSL models (BEATs, EAT, and Dasheng), both with and without discriminative fine-tuning. Furthermore, the challenge results proved the effectiveness of the proposed approach, where the NA-BEATs system won the challenge by a large margin, achieving an official score of 70.24%, while the second-place system achieved 65.46%.

Simulation-Based Plate-Reverb Parameter Estimation from a Single Impulse Response

Minhui Lu, Joshua D. Reiss
摘要

We present a simulation-trained, non-iterative estimator for Task A of the 1st DAFx Parameter Estimation Challenge. Each unnormalized plate-reverb impulse response is summarized by amplitude, spectral, and decay descriptors, and an ensemble of tree regressors estimates the six target parameters in one pass. Across two independent synthetic validation sets, the normalized models outperform the training-set mean and an earlier raw-regression baseline. On a shared set, the final ensemble also outperforms a single run of the official default PSO at substantially lower inference cost. Since the official labels are hidden, parameter accuracy is measured on simulator-matched data, and the released responses support only audio-side consistency checks. The estimator returns point estimates without uncertainty.

Band-Count Dense Modal Estimation with Fixed-Frequency Differentiable Resonator Refinement

Minhui Lu, Joshua D. Reiss
摘要

Task B of the 1st DAFx Parameter Estimation Challenge requires estimating the frequencies, decay rates, gains, and number of modes in a dense plate-reverb impulse response. Weak and overlapping modes make sparse peak detection prone to severe undercounting. We train an ExtraTrees regressor on simulator-generated data to predict mode counts in four frequency bands. These counts define dense frequency grids, after which a differentiable all-pole resonator model refines decay and gain while keeping frequency fixed. On two separate synthetic validation sets, the system reduces a local challenge-style error by about 66% relative to the official default peak-picking baseline. The improvement is mainly associated with lower mode-count mismatch, while decay and gain remain the largest error sources. These findings support separating modal-density estimation from continuous parameter fitting.

Experience-Calibrated Contrastive Decoding for Mitigating Hallucinations in LM-Based Text-to-Speech

Chenlin Liu, Minghui Fang, Zhonghao Bi, Zekai Su, Rong Wang, Jiqing Han
摘要

Language model-based text-to-speech (LM-based TTS) remains vulnerable to speech hallucinations that deviate from the target text. Existing mitigation mainly relies on architectural changes or additional training, while decoding-time control remains underexplored. We present a conditional information view that distinguishes text-derived alignment information from experience information supplied by acoustic context and learned speech regularities. We hypothesize that an important class of hallucinations begins when alignment support is insufficiently reflected in the selected token at a vulnerable transition. Using predictions from the same speech LM with and without text conditions, we propose Experience-Calibrated Contrastive Decoding (ECCD), a training-free method that strengthens alignment support while preserving useful experience information. ECCD preserves the original expert distribution, applies only positive alignment enhancement, and calibrates its strength using set-level experience compatibility. Across four models, ECCD reduces WER/CER by up to 55.6% in all SeedTTS-Eval settings and 24 of 25 multilingual CV3-Eval settings. A listening test yields a CMOS gain of $+0.644$ while retaining strong speaker similarity. Further analysis shows that alignment influence and decision-level gain vary within linguistic units and are lower at first-error boundaries than at matched correct boundaries. Overall, these extensive experiments and analyses identify conditional information control as a promising decoding-time direction for mitigating speech hallucination.

REIMU: Efficient Heterogeneous Hierarchical Reasoning for SSL-Based Speech Deepfake Detection

Kwok-Ho Ng, Tingting Song, Bingwen Feng, Peiya Li
摘要

The increasing realism of speech generated by text-to-speech and voice conversion systems poses growing challenges to media integrity and voice authentication. Self-supervised learning (SSL) has substantially advanced speech deepfake detection, where downstream backbones conventionally process SSL representations through a single forward pass. This work investigates the practical effectiveness of recurrent hierarchical reasoning for this task. We term this controlled study REIMU and systematically compare conventional single-pass backbones, weight-shared recurrence, homogeneous HRM, and heterogeneous HRM across four Base-scale SSL frontends. We further examine heterogeneous high- and low-level modules that combine self-attention with linear attention. Experiments on the ASVspoof 2019 and 2021 evaluation sets show that recurrence and hierarchical decomposition do not inherently improve detection, whereas heterogeneous operator assignment provides a more competitive configuration. Notably, the heterogeneous design remains competitive while using 10.8\% fewer downstream parameters than the matched baseline, demonstrating its potential for parameter-efficient speech deepfake detection.

Beyond One-Size-Fits-All: Personalized and Culturally Adaptive Emotional TTS via Interactive Optimization of Individual Emotion Perception Spaces

Wangzixi Zhou, Bagus Tris Atmaja, Sakriani Sakti
摘要

The rise of conversational AI has increased interest in emotional Text-to-Speech (TTS). Most systems rely on discrete emotion labels, which fail to capture the nuanced nature of human affect. Recent models employ dimensional representations such as Russell's arousal-valence (A-V) model, offering finer control. However, emotional perception varies across individuals and cultures, which may cause mismatches between modeled and perceived emotions. We propose a personalized and culturally adaptive emotional TTS framework that performs interactive optimization of individualized A-V perception spaces using an Interactive Genetic Algorithm. By adapting emotion representations to each listener, the system produces speech with more perceptually aligned emotional expression than models using averaged A-V values. Evaluations with Japanese, Chinese, and Indonesian participants highlight the importance of personalization and cultural adaptation for moving beyond one-size-fits-all emotional TTS.

Latent Softmax for Data-Efficient Phoneme-Based Multilingual ASR Across Tonal and Non-Tonal Languages

Saierdaer Yusuyin, Nanling Jiang, Hao Huang, Zhijian Ou
摘要

Phoneme-based multilingual automatic speech recognition (ASR) can share acoustic evidence across languages more directly than language-specific subword modeling. When tonal and non-tonal languages are jointly trained, however, their supervision granularity does not match: tonal languages annotate tone-marked vowels, whereas non-tonal languages typically provide only base-vowel labels. A standard softmax either treats the two as unrelated classes, weakening cross-lingual sharing, or collapses tones, losing distinctions required by tonal languages. We propose Latent Softmax, a connectionist temporal classification (CTC)-compatible output layer that models tone-marked vowels as subclasses and base vowels as major classes, while consonants and the CTC blank remain singleton labels. When only a base-vowel major-class label is observed, the tone-marked vowel subclass is treated as latent and marginalized out. Multilingual experiments on AISHELL-1 Mandarin and LibriSpeech English show that Latent Softmax reduces speech-to-phoneme (S2P) phoneme error rates over a standard softmax multilingual baseline by 8.4% on AISHELL-1, 17.5% on LibriSpeech test-clean, and 12.6% on test-other. The improved speech-to-phoneme encoders also yield consistent word error rate gains for both large-language-model phoneme-to-grapheme conversion and projector-based interfaces. After code-switching adaptation, Latent Softmax further reduces projector-based mixed error rate by 2.6% on ASRU2019 and 9.5% on CS-Dialogue datasets.

Music Restoration via Latent Operator Optimization and Diffusion Model Priors

摘要

Music restoration seeks to recover a clean signal from an observed recording degraded by an unknown effect, distortion, or corruption. Existing systems often rely on paired training data and distortion-specific supervision, which limits their use when the forward process is not known in advance. We propose LOUDAR (Latent-space Optimization of Unknown Distortion for Audio Restoration) a general-purpose restoration method that operates in the latent space of a pretrained audio autoencoder and models the unknown distortion as a learnable latent operator. At inference time, LOUDAR alternates between estimating the clean latent variable and updating the latent operator parameters. An unconditional latent diffusion model provides a prior over clean audio and regularizes this inference by steering the latent estimate toward the manifold of clean recordings. Because the degradation model is adapted per input, the approach is broadly applicable across diverse restoration problems. We evaluate LOUDAR on singing voice effect removal and restoration, as well as guitar distortion removal, and show that it consistently improves over degraded inputs and is competitive with supervised and unsupervised baselines in waveform and latent domains.

摘要

This paper investigates commercial-style capacitive MEMS microphone dies as air-coupled ultrasonic transmitters under nonlinear pull-in and snap-back actuation and demonstrates a compact parametric-array prototype. A single die produces large diaphragm displacement and measurable ultrasonic pressure in air. A 28-die array driven at 83 and 93 kHz generates a directional component at the 10 kHz difference frequency. Measurements are compared with analytical radiation theory and finite-element modeling, and the effects of aperture, fill factor, device uniformity, and receiver nonlinearity are discussed.

Deep Learning-Based Active Trim Panels for Enhanced Aircraft Interior Noise Control

Boxiang Wang, Malte Misol, Zhengding Luo, Junwei Ji, Xiaoyi Shen, Dongyuan Shi, Woon-Seng Gan
摘要

Active noise control (ANC) trim panels offer an effective solution to suppress multi-tonal noise in aircraft. The selective fixed-filter ANC (SFANC) method, characterized by low computational complexity, high robustness and rapid response, is suitable to handle multi-tonal engine noise that varies in frequency due to changes in the rotational speed of the engine shaft. However, real-world conditions introduce variations in lining temperature, altering acoustic and structural paths and degrading noise reduction performance. To address this challenge, a temperature-perceptive SFANC (TP-SFANC) approach is proposed that employs a lightweight one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN) trained using a multi-task learning strategy. By processing both reference and error signals, the 1D CNN learns frequency and temperature characteristics to dynamically select the optimal control filter. Numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in attenuating multi-tonal noise across varying frequencies and lining temperatures.

摘要

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) for cleft lip and palate (CLP) speech is difficult because acoustic and articulatory patterns vary across severity levels. This variability reduces the performance of pretrained ASR systems, and conventional fine-tuning may not generalize well under low-resource, heterogeneous CLP conditions. This work proposes Normal-Anchored First-Order Model-Agnostic Meta-Learning (NA-FOMAML) for adapting Whisper to CLP speech. The method uses a first-order bilevel meta-learning framework in which normal speech is used in the inner loop as a stable support condition, while CLP severity groups are used in the outer loop to improve post-adaptation robustness. This design aims to reduce the performance gap between normal and pathological speech. Experiments are conducted on the NMCPC and AIISH datasets using four normal-anchored training configurations. Frozen encoder, full encoder, and selected Whisper encoder-layer tuning strategies are evaluated, including layers 0--5, 4--11, 6--11, and 8--11, with decoder and projection-head adaptation. Results show that outer-loop training with only normal speech is insufficient. For NMCPC, full encoder tuning with Normal to Normal+Mild+Moderate gives WERs of 4.40%, 5.53%, 16.14%, and 52.07% for normal, mild, moderate, and severe speech. For AIISH, full encoder tuning with Normal to Normal+Mild+Moderate+Severe gives WERs of 2.48%, 19.66%, 14.05%, and 57.50%. A transcription-based phoneme-category analysis shows that severe CLP speech has high error rates across fricatives, affricates, nasals, liquids, plosives, and vowels. Overall, NA-FOMAML improves cross-severity robustness, but severe speech still requires severity-aware sampling, phoneme-aware loss functions, and augmentation targeting pressure consonant and resonance-related distortions.

The Learning Objective Governs Perceptual Narrowing: A Cross-Lingual, Layer-Wise, Ten-Seed Study of Self-Supervised Speech Encoders

Sejin Yoo
摘要

Perceptual narrowing---the developmental loss of non-native phoneme discrimination in the first year of life \citep{werker1984}---is a canonical developmental finding, yet \emph{what learning objective produces it} remains open. We train a \(\sim\)7\,M-parameter Transformer encoder on child-directed and read speech and evaluate phoneme ABX in English, French, and Mandarin over ten seeds, the seed as the unit of replication. Six results. \textbf{(1)}~The objective sets the direction of cross-lingual transfer: reconstruction (masked mel-prediction) degrades non-native discrimination, prediction (frame-contrastive) improves it---a same-encoder, same-data gap of \(+0.051\) in first-layer Mandarin ABX (\(p=3\times10^{-8}\)), unanimous in sign across twenty runs. \textbf{(2)}~That decline combines a large arm-intrinsic difficulty gradient with a smaller language-specialization effect (matched vs.\ mismatched \(+0.022\), \(p=10^{-4}\), all four layers). \textbf{(3)}~Against a language-symmetric raw-mel floor, reconstruction pushes the first layer \emph{below} the discriminability of its input; prediction pushes it \emph{above}. \textbf{(4)}~Read speech gives a \(3.6\times\) steeper non-native decline than child-directed speech. \textbf{(5)}~The customary three-seed budget cannot see this reliably: an effect unambiguous at ten seeds is called significant by as few as 70\% of three-seed subsets. \textbf{(6)}~Six objective configurations---sharpening, compression, consolidation, their composition, and word-level semantic grounding in two forms---fail to produce the full developmental signature (native improves \emph{and} non-native declines): a single objective moves both languages the same way because it acts on a shared representation. We conclude that the objective, not the architecture, is the first-order determinant of narrowing-shaped representational change.

DRONEAUDIONET: Noise Suppression for Drone Audition-based Search and Rescue

摘要

Microphones mounted on UAVs enable aerial acoustic scene analysis applications such as search-and-rescue, wildlife monitoring, and industrial inspection. However, drone rotor noise often dominates the mixture signal at SNRs well below -10 dB, making source recovery extremely challenging. Existing enhancement and source separation methods are typically designed for near-balanced mixtures and degrade substantially in drone audition settings. In this work, we propose DRONEAUDIONET, a drone noise suppression method that reframes a source separation model as a drone noise estimator. To better model drone-dominant mixtures, we introduce a learnable mask-scaling mechanism that allows mask magnitudes beyond unity, together with an additive residual correction term for improved drone estimation and source recovery. We train and evaluate our model on a publicly available drone audition dataset and test generalizability on an out-of-domain dataset with unseen drone hardware and flight modes. Results show that DRONEAUDIONET consistently improves downstream sound classification performance, with the largest gains observed for human vocal sounds. Our findings demonstrate the importance of drone-specific modeling for robust aerial acoustic perception and highlight the potential of source separation methods for real-world drone-assisted search-and-rescue.

Improving ASR Fairness for Cleft Lip and Palate Speech: A Study on Severity-Aware Data Mixing

Susmita Bhattacharjee, Jagabandhu Mishra, H.S. Shekhawat, Ravi Jasuja, S. R. Mahadeva Prasanna
摘要

Speech produced by individuals with cleft lip and palate (CLP) is often hypernasal (and sometimes breathy) due to structural anomalies, yielding shifts in formant structure that degrade automatic speech recognition (ASR) performance and fairness. Building on evidence that mainstream ASR systems underperform on atypical and disordered speech, we posit that widely used services (e.g., Google Speech-to-Text) exhibit reduced fairness for CLP speech, and we evaluate this claim empirically. To quantify fairness consistently, we introduce a simple fairness score (FS) that trades off overall error and between-group disparity. Despite formant disruptions, mild and moderate CLP speech retains partial spectro-temporal alignment with typical speech, motivating the use of mixing strategies to improve fairness. We systematically investigated severity-aware mixing of CLP and normal speech at different severity levels and assessed its effect on fairness. Three ASR models GMM-HMM, Whisper, and XLSR were evaluated on the AIISH (Kannada language) and NMCPC (English language) datasets. A mixing strategy that leverages severity-aware mixing of CLP and normal speech improves fairness on both English (NMCPC) and Kannada (AIISH) corpora. Notably, the word error rate (WER) decreased from 37.58% to 25.47% (GMM-HMM, AIISH) and from 35.74% to 21.72% (Whisper, NMCPC).

From Who Said What to Who They Are: Modular Training-free Identity-Aware LLM Refinement of Speaker Diarization

Yu-Wen Chen, William Ho, Maxim Topaz, Julia Hirschberg, Zoran Kostic
摘要

Speaker diarization (SD) remains challenging in real-world scenarios due to dynamic environments and unknown speaker numbers. SD is rarely used alone and is typically paired with automatic speech recognition (ASR). However, existing non-modular SD+ASR frameworks lack flexibility and do not provide true speaker identities. We propose a training-free modular pipeline combining off-the-shelf SD, ASR, and a large language model (LLM) to determine who spoke, what was said, and who they are. Using structured LLM prompting on reconciled SD and ASR outputs, our method leverages semantic continuity in conversational context to refine low-confidence speaker labels and assigns role identities while correcting split speakers. On a real-world patient-clinician dataset, our approach achieves a 29.7% relative error reduction over baseline reconciled SD and ASR. It enhances diarization performance without additional training and delivers a complete pipeline for SD, ASR, and speaker identity detection in practical applications.

Gradient-based Optimisation of Modulation Effects

Alistair Carson, Alec Wright, Stefan Bilbao
摘要

Modulation effects such as phasers, flangers and chorus effects are heavily used in conjunction with the electric guitar. Machine learning based emulation of analog modulation units has been investigated in recent years, but most methods have either been limited to one class of effect or suffer from a high computational cost or latency compared to canonical digital implementations. Here, we build on previous work and present a framework for modelling flanger, chorus and phaser effects based on differentiable digital signal processing. The model is trained in the time-frequency domain, but at inference operates in the time-domain, requiring zero latency. We investigate the challenges associated with gradient-based optimisation of such effects, and show that low-frequency weighting of loss functions avoids convergence to local minima when learning delay times. We show that when trained against analog effects units, sound output from the model is in some cases perceptually indistinguishable from the reference, but challenges still remain for effects with long delay times and feedback.

摘要

Music generation foundation models have recently attracted significant industry attention. However, achieving efficient generation and high-fidelity long-form audio while supporting controllability remains challenging. To address these needs, we present \textbf{WanSong}, a simple yet powerful approach for long-form, commercial-grade song generation. Unlike autoregressive (AR) and cascaded multi-stage pipelines (\eg, AR followed by diffusion), \textbf{WanSong} is a pure diffusion-based model that directly generates high-fidelity, multilingual songs up to 5 minutes and outputs dual stems (vocals and background music) in a single run. In addition, our diffusion framework enables faster inference through step-distillation, and offers an efficient pathway for fine-tuning and customization to support downstream editing tasks.

A Geometry-Limited Identification Floor and Its Consequences for Voice-Clone Attribution in Professional Voice Actors

Shuhei Kato
摘要

A voice actor's voice is their asset, and AI cloning directly threatens it. The natural defense flags the enrolled actor whose embedding similarity to a suspect recording crosses a threshold. We show it fails where it is most needed: trained voices crowd the embedding space, and each actor performs many styles. On 1,168 Japanese voice actors (56,568 segments, ~63 h), a misidentification floor survives calibration, score normalization, and discriminative re-ranking (linear and nonlinear, including PLDA): the residual is a limit of the embedding geometry, not of the back-ends we evaluate. The best ensemble still leaves ~2.6% closed-set misidentification, several-fold above matched controls; session-disjoint, re-ranking lowers the floor only to 13.0%. The same crowding drives false attribution: on a generic English encoder, roughly half the clones of non-enrolled people falsely accuse an enrolled actor, while -- by a separate real-vs-synthetic shift -- 32% of Seed-VC clones of enrolled targets are missed at the same threshold; one operating point couples the two, and none escapes both. A domain-matched, voice-actor-trained encoder mitigates substantially (a four-fold gender gap vanishes; wrongful misattribution falls to 1.5-10%), but does not remove the floor. Controls (codec, channel, vocoder, content) support reading the miss rate as a real-versus-synthetic covariate shift, not missing speaker information. Fixed-threshold clone attribution is thus unreliable here, and on a generic encoder unfair. Robust attribution must extend spoofing-aware speaker verification to open-set 1:N (anti-spoofing gate, domain-matched encoder, per-speaker calibration, abstain option), and even then supports detection, not autonomous enforcement.

Hidden-Domain Routing for All-Type Audio Deepfake Detection

Yifan Gao, Yao Tian, Hongbin Suo, Haonan Lu
摘要

All-type audio deepfake detection requires authenticity decisions across speech, environmental sound, singing voice, and music, while the audio type is unavailable at inference time. In AT-ADD Track2, this setting creates a hidden audio-domain condition: the binary real/fake label is shared across domains, but representation structure and detector-score behavior vary with audio type. We present a closed-condition routed system that first recovers the hidden audio domain and then interprets detector scores within the selected branch. The AudioType-BEATs-6s Router estimates audio type from a 6-second window; speech inputs are handled by the Speech-XLSR Expert, while sound, singing, and music rely on EAT-based general-audio experts with branch-local score interpretation. Development-set representation analysis, router-family comparisons, and component results show audio-domain separation and complementary detector strengths across audio types. On the official AT-ADD Track2 final evaluation, the system achieves 96.10% Track2 Macro-F1 and ranks first on the final leaderboard, with type-wise Macro-F1 scores of 88.07%, 98.18%, 99.07%, and 99.08% for speech, sound, singing, and music, respectively. These results support recovering the hidden audio domain before interpreting detector scores in all-type audio deepfake detection.

Existing evaluations largely assess whether an output matches a prompt, but prompt matching alone does not reveal whether characteristics outside the intended change remain stable. We examine this distinction through a controlled paired audit of three speech-generation systems: CosyVoice3, VoxCPM2, and Fish-Speech-S2. The evaluation contains 5,940 outputs spanning six reference speakers, ten texts, three random seeds, and eleven conditions. Using acoustic, prosodic, content, and speaker measurements, we find that responses in the expected target direction are frequently accompanied by changes outside descriptor-specific signal-level target sets. This pattern remains among outputs whose target response exceeds baseline seed variation, and the accompanying changes differ substantially across systems. We further introduce VoDER-Cal, a training-free candidate selector that retains sufficiently strong target responses while favoring smaller off-target deviations. A three-candidate pool raises the joint success rate from 4.8% under single-sample direct generation to approximately 14% for all candidate-selection policies. Within the matched three-candidate budget, VoDER-Cal reduces held-out off-target deviation from 0.344 under target-only selection to 0.276 and improves listener-rated preservation. Preservation-sensitive evaluation therefore complements prompt-adherence evaluation, while candidate reranking offers a practical inference-time improvement. AnyBand: Unified Multi-Bandwidth Speech Extension via Frequency-Aware In-Context Spectral Infilling

Junchuan Zhao, Minh Duc Vu, Bowen Zhang, Ye Wang
摘要

Bandwidth extension (BWE) aims to recover missing high-frequency content from band-limited speech. Existing methods often formulate BWE as a fixed or predefined bandwidth conversion problem, potentially requiring cutoff-specific models or retraining when the input bandwidth changes. This assumption limits their applicability to practical scenarios where speech may arrive with diverse cutoff frequencies. We propose AnyBand, a unified BWE framework that recasts bandwidth extension as in-context spectral infilling. Motivated by prompt-based zero-shot speech generation, AnyBand conditions high-frequency generation on the observed low-frequency spectrum, using the available band as a frequency-domain prompt that conveys content, speaker, prosodic, and spectral-envelope cues. This formulation enables a single model to perform cutoff-conditioned generation over a continuous range of input bandwidths. AnyBand is trained with missing-band conditional flow matching and an Easy-to-Balanced cutoff curriculum over continuously sampled cutoff frequencies. To better exploit the spectral prompt, we introduce a frequency-aware Diffusion Transformer that models cross-frequency interactions and long-range temporal dependencies, followed by a physically motivated multi-view adversarial refinement stage to enhance spectral realism, envelope coherence, and harmonic consistency. Experiments on multiple datasets and bandwidth settings show that AnyBand consistently improves spectral reconstruction over existing baselines while achieving competitive perceptual quality across both standard and irregular input cutoffs. Audio samples are available.

UOT-IR: Structured Routing of High-Polyphony Symbolic Music into Fixed-Budget Representations

Ziyue Kang, Nan Nan, Chenhao Lin, Xiaohong Guan
摘要

High-polyphony symbolic music is increasingly used in generation, analysis, and arrangement, yet many downstream tasks require bounded representations with fixed tracks or slots. Converting richly orchestrated scores into compact forms is therefore necessary, but existing approaches relying on heuristic simplification or generic representation-space reduction often fail to preserve structural roles, orchestration compatibility, and playability under strict budgets. To address the issue, this study reformulates the compression problem as a fixed-budget structured routing problem and proposes Unbalanced Optimal Transport for Information Routing (UOT-IR), a training-free framework based on constrained unbalanced optimal transport. UOT-IR combines an orchestration prior, adaptive marginal relaxation, temporal decoding, and playability-aware projection to produce compact and musically coherent bounded representations. This work further studies two practical settings under the same slot budget: template standardization, which maps each input to a predefined bounded template, and adaptive preservation, which retains representative content without assuming an external template. Experiments on the SymphonyNet corpus show that UOT-IR delivers strong overall performance across both settings, including the best Note-F1 in adaptive preservation (0.9120), together with the lowest structural cost (14.7165) and bad structural confusion rate (0.3406) in template standardization. This work establishes a principled paradigm for fixed-budget symbolic music compression, offering a practical path toward compact, structured, and musically coherent symbolic representations.

摘要

Wearable silent speech interfaces (SSIs) are limited to small, closed vocabularies. Approaches achieving larger vocabularies require obtrusive hardware such as facial electrodes. We present SoniSpeech, the first large-scale, open-vocabulary, trimodal dataset for wearable SSI using acoustic-sensing eyewear. It contains 34 hours across 18,000 utterances with three synchronized modalities: ultrasound echo profiles, voiced audio, and frontal video, in both voiced and silent modes. The corpus draws from the SODA dialogue dataset, providing contemporary conversational English with 5,356 unique words and full phoneme coverage. A CTC-based ResNet-34 baseline achieves 26.3% word error rate (WER) on open-vocabulary silent speech recognition, the first benchmark for this task. Dataset is available at this https URL

Separate-and-Detect: Unified Drum Transcription and Stem Generation via Latent Diffusion

摘要

Automatic Drum Transcription (ADT) is commonly formulated as a direct mapping from a music mixture to symbolic drum events. While effective for transcription, this formulation discards the acoustic stems that are useful for editing, remixing, and production. We revisit an alternative separate-and-detect formulation, where a drum source separation front end first produces five editable drum stems, and a fixed onset detector then converts each stem into symbolic events. The separator is built on a five-stem latent diffusion model that jointly generates kick, snare, toms, hi-hats, and cymbals in a compact VAE latent space. We further study two training-only auxiliary branches--an onset branch (OB) and a timbre branch (TB)--which shape the separator during learning but are discarded at inference. Trained on synthetic drum multitracks and evaluated on MDB Drums and ENST-Drums, the proposed pipeline consistently improves over a strong U-Net-based drum separation baseline in overall transcription F1. It also outperforms a representative end-to-end ADT system on kick and snare F1 under our evaluation protocol, while additionally providing separated audio stems. The ablation results show that OB gives the most stable transcription gains, whereas TB changes the trade-off between reconstruction, acoustic stem quality, and onset detection. These results suggest that generative drum demixing can serve not only as a source separation model, but also as a practical front end for interpretable drum transcription.
